Clean Energy Futures
World is experiencing an energy
revolution to rival the invention of the steam engine. A whole range
of clean renewable energy technologies are emerging. They include
not just solar and wind power but also tidal, wave, hydro,
geothermal, biofuels and ground source heat exchange. We need clean
energy sources to replace fossil fuels such as coal and oil, which
produce greenhouse gas emissions and cause global warming The UN's International Panel on Climate Change also identified energy
efficiency as the quickest and easiest way to reduce
greenhouse emissions. It is estimated that a third of all
energy we use is waisted
The UN General Assembly has declared 2012 as
the International Year for Sustainable
Energy
With the Clean Energy Act
in effect, we in Australia are making our first
big steps in building a clean energy economy and cutting the
pollution that drives global warming. This means more jobs and
innovation, with cleaner air and a safer climate, and a healthier,
smarter and fairer society. But you can be absolutely sure that the
naysayers and doomsayers, those who profit from pollution or simply
try to hold back change, will continue be out in force
attacking what has been achieved. Putting a price on pollution,
investing in clean, renewable energy and supporting
householders is the most effective and efficient way to cut the
pollution. We now pay less for what we earn while polluters pay more
for what they burn
Between Europe, New Zealand, parts of the USA,
Canada and China and others, a billion people around the world
already live with a price on pollution and the sky hasn't fallen
in as Abbott and the Coalition continually predict. Australia is the fifteenth most
polluting country in the world in absolute
terms
In Australia three hundred major
industrial polluters are now be taxed. The main effect on
households is from power increases, which is due mainly to
upgrades in poles and wires, not the Tax. Power supplier AGL says that an
upgrade is now deemed largely unnecessary as power usage is down by
15 per cent due to the installation of roof top solar panels, as and
mine is, eliminating all power charges. The extra cost to most
households is about $3.30 per week and the rebate is $10.10 per
week. Nine out of ten homes are now being
compensated
This is the start of an amazing transformation
and reform in Australia and around the
World
