         Environment

Due to the pressures of population and technology, environments are often degraded and sometimes permanently

According to a study published several years ago in the journal 'Science' few places on our planet have been untouched by modern humans. Satellite images taken from thousands of kilometres above the Earth reveal a world that has been irrevocably changed by human and use over the past decades. From Arctic tundra to primeval rainforest to arid desert, our natural world has been fragmented by ever expanding towns and cities. This is recognised and some governments place restraints on activities that are causing environmental degradation. We must encourage others to do the same

The need to supply food, fibre, fuels, shelter, and freshwater to more than six billion people is driving the wholesale conversion of forests, wetlands, grasslands, and other ecosystems

Rapid population growth creates pressure on basic resources such as water, forests and land, as well as threatening plant and animal species with extinction. Providing family planning to the millions of couples who want it can reduce this pressure. Research shows that family planning and natural resource conservation are an effective combination that can improve economic development, public health and environmental sustainability. Advocates that reproductive health always be included among the components of international development programs

.

Activism by the environment movement has created awareness of the various environmental issues, but there is not full agreement on the extent of the impact of human activities, and the protection measures undertaken are often criticised.

Institutions now offer courses such as environmental studies management and engineering that study the history and methods of protection. It is needed to protect from various human activities, such as waste, pollution, loss of biodiversity, introduction of invasive species, release of genetically modified organisms and toxics. These are some of the issues addressed in environmental protection

.

We encourage you to speak out on behalf of endangered wildlife and encourage sustainable energy policies. Demand better funding for climate change research, and encourage corporations to do more to prevent pollution. Protest the loss of forests, bush and biodiversity

.

Please fight to have dangerous environmental toxins banned and encourage your elected officials to make saving and protecting the environment a top priority. Support your environmetal advocates and join conservation organisations to make your voice heard on important environmental issues which will make a real difference, and stay informed

Australia's Environment

Abo ElderAustralia is one of the oldest continents and the effects of over 250 million years of erosion have turned it into a flat, low lying and stable land mass. It has a wide variety of landforms and much of the flat inland is desert which at one time was a fertile area with many lakes and marshes. Some of the old lakes survive today as salt lakes like Lake Eyre in SA with the lowest elevation below sea level. The highest peak is Mt Kosciusko in the Australian Alps in NSW

Australia is a continent that experiences a variety of climates due to its size, and  tends to be warm and sunny without distinct seasons. The temperate south has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. In the north, a tropical climate with a warm, dry season and a hot, wet season and is prone to flooding and cylones. There tends to be no autumn or fall as our native trees dont have a specific time to shed their leaves. Some areas can get extreme cold with frosts and there are two extensive developed ski fields close to Melbourne and Sydney

Whilst Australia is often thought of as a dry thinly populated land, this is only true of the inland or outback areas as the east coast is heavily populated. The huge interior is hot and dry with vast expanses of sandy desert or stone plains giving way to shrub savannah or mallee scrub. The main mountains are along the east coast, known as the Great Dividing Range. In coastal regions the environments range from tropical rain forest in the north, to pastoral lands and forest in the east and south east, to alpine country in the Snowy Mountains and central Tasmania. Australia 's deserts are as vast as the Sahara and the snowfields huge and picturesque. The surfing beaches are among the best in the world and a land of unique flora and fauna   Most of Australia is covered by native vegetation despite extensive tree clearing. Many of the desert landscapes are covered only by native plants such as saltbush and sparsely

There are seventeen properties on the World Heritage List including, the Great Barrier Reef  the wet tropics of Queensland and Shark Bay. And the World Natural Heritage criteria is supported with Kakadu National Park , Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park , Purnululu National Park    Both the Willandra Lakes region and the Tasmanian Wilderness  are listed for natural and cultural criteria

Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Naracoorte/Riversleigh), Lord Howe Island Group, central eastern rainforest Reserves   Fraser Island, Macquarie Island , Heard Island, McDonald Islands and the Greater Blue Mountains  in NSW are all areas listed under the Natural World Heritage criteria too

For tens of thousands of years, the lives and cultural identity for indigenous Australians were inextricably linked to the land, its forms and flora and fauna. Today the identity of all Australians is shaped by a relationship with the natural environment

Barnett's browse warning   Western Australia’s Premier Colin Barnett has opened a new front in his campaign for a land based gas hub at James Price Point. But they have a terrible track record when it comes to protecting our environment! Larissa Waters has called on everyone who cares, to tell the Prime Minister, Minister Burke and your local MP to reverse this reckless decision, so please make your views known. It's about time they heard your voice not just that of big business and mining barons. Senator Waters asked that you copy her email address when you write, so she can follow up. senator.waters@aph.gov.au.
