Desmond Tutu quote

  Human Rights

They are about recognising and respecting the inherent value and the dignity of all people

That every person has inherent dignity and value. To recognise and respect that fundamental worth in ourselves and in each other.

Standards are contained in internationally agreed human rights treaties and declaration

Australian Human Rights Commission is responsible for promoting and encouraging protection of human rights in Australia

.

Australia has agreed to uphold the human rights standards set out in a number of international treaties and declarations. My vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. Article 19 states that " Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression and this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media regardless of frontiers"   Freedom of expression is intimately linked to political debate and the concept of democracy and the Internet is being used widely.

                                                      Peace

Nicola RoxenAustralian Story   Australia's Attorney General Nicola Roxon, spoke of her long term vision and the nation's legal system and values of fairness, dignity and equality The Australian Human Rights Commission will no longer be chronically underfunded. Show your support for human rights and urge governments everywhere to grant their citizens freedom of speech and freedom from political, ethnic or religious persecution. Support the organizations that work to free prisoners of conscience. Speak out against unlawful imprisonment and torture. Call for an end to crimes against humanity and help refugees displaced by war find safe places to rebuild their lives. Protest the abuse and exploitation of children and raise your voice on behalf of women's equality

Belal KhazaaalAuthors appeal overturned Former Qantas cabin cleaner and editor of the 'Call to Islam' magazine. Belal Khazaal 42 of Lakemba Australia faced trial in 2008. He has been returned to prison after the High Court upheld his original conviction for producing a do-it-yourself terrorism manual, and been sentenced to 12 years' jail with a non -parole period of nine yearsLast year, the Court of Criminal Appeal quashed Khazaal's conviction on the grounds that he had shown a reasonable possibility the manual was not intended to facilitate terrorism. The majority accepted that Khazaal was a journalist and researcher with an academic interest in Islam. Why have they singled out Khazaal ? and is such a long sentence justified in the circumstances. Perhaps his legal team’s defense should have been accepted again. Is this justice, as clearly jailing Khazaal will not change anything on the net and such material will continue to be available throughout the world. This seems to be a matter of Human Rights as the severity of his sentence is outrageuos normally exspected in other regimes and not Australia

Refugees

Asylum Seekers Australian boat people

.

Amnesty LogoTell Abbott and Gillard Don’t punish refugees in your name as Australian politicians voted to remove the right to asylum in Australia for asylum seekers who arrive by boat. From now on they will be sent for processing to the likes of Nauru, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Abbott and Gillard claim this will 'save lives', but we know this is just political spin. Howard's Pacific Solution was condemned and dismantled for a reason, it destroyed the mental health of some of the world's most vulnerable people; leading to self-harm and suicide. It was estimated to cost taxpayers over $1 billion. It broke international law, and it even failed to stop the boats

.

Assylum Bill  It passed the Lower House  but the debate in the Aussie Parliament was a waste of time and ridiculous. They are not illegal and they will continue to come here, and sinking’s will continue, whatever happens. There continues to be an impasse between the Parties in Parliament. The total numbers that come here are relatively low in World terms, and the number by boats is even lower. Offshore processing is inhumane, not a deterrent and expensive. Despite what Abbott says the boats did not stop under the Howard Government. The Greens proposal is much better more humane quicker and less costly, and they want and increase the numbers of arrivals allowed. Statistics show that most arrivals are genuine, and become achievers and excellent ‘New Australian’ citizens and should be encouraged and supported

.

Asylum boats caught in limbo Panel discuss whether turning back the boats will work when Indonesia will refuse to accept them and it’s also very dangerous to all concerned. Abbott questioned about un-Christian attitude on talk back radio yesterday

.

Deadlock on asylum issue strikes at the heart Asylum seekers are largely fleeing social violence, including war. Our governments have made us complicit in some of those horrors. Some might argue that a lack of cooperation between Abbott and the Prime Minister and her government is literally killing people

Detention unlawful  Australian High Court rules detention of refugees cleared, but not by ASIO as unlawful. 50 to be reassesed

History will judge us on asylum seekers too  Australian government's attitude is clashing violently with the reality of humanitarian migration. Our quest to regulate migration in every aspect is leading us down a dangerous path, one that has already seen us violate international human rights law and trample upon some of the core precepts of refugee protection. As our government desperately clings onto a notion of sovereignty that is incompatible with global humanitarianism

For those who've come across the sea  By boat or by plane, people continue to arrive on our shores outside our immigration system. So, what is to be done? Why can't Australia come up with a humane, compassionate and fair set of policies on asylum seekers? A panel discussed this complex and always controversial topic

.

Where to Now ? Australia is the only western country to incarcerate people for such long periods and the number of  arrivals is so much lower than elsewhere. US, Britain, Germany and other European states abandoned the policy years ago and it makes no sense to lock up asylum seekers arriving by boat while those arriving by plane, the majority, are allowed to live in the community while claims are processed. Those who come by boat are the most desperate and vulnerable and history shows that 70 per cent receive their visa

.

Artificial Australian seeker  Using the number of arrivals as a reason for calling the current situation an ‘asylum seeker crisis’ is unjustified as Australia does not host a fair proportion of asylum seekers

.

Internet access is not a human right Report by the UN declared that the Internet had become an indispensable tool for realizing a range of human rights. Courts and parliaments in countries like France and Estonia have pronounced Internet access a human right

.
US is trying to control and police the Internet There are many current examples and if accused, they can argue against extradition on the grounds of possible torture or inhumane prison conditions. If extradited to America, they may put you in a super max prison and hold you in solitary confinement, and in the case of Julian Assange execution
The wider issue is the attempts of the US government to reduce the freedom of the Internet and bring in new laws to control it. Freedom of expression is a recognized human right, and freedom of information can include opposition to copyrights or intellectual property in general
