My Aim Is True Elvis Costello is an English singer songwriter. He began his career as part of London's pub rock scene in the early 1970s and later became associated with the first wave of the British Punk/New Wave movement of the mid-to-late 1970s. His critically acclaimed debut album, ‘My Aim Is True’, was recorded in 1976. Steeped in word play, the vocabulary of Costello's lyrics is broader than that of most popular songs. His music has drawn on many diverse genres. one critic described him as a ‘pop encyclopaedia’, able to ‘reinvent the past in his own image’. He has won multiple awards in his career, including a Grammy Award.

Regina SpectaFolding Chair When you ask Regina Spektor to describe the kind of music she creates, her response is deceptively simple,  saying that  "I play songs that I write on piano,"   Of course she does, but in the musical world of this Russian born New Yorker, the reality is much more complicated. She does play the songs she writes on piano but she's also been known to drum on a wooden chair, use unorthodox vocal techniques, turning her microphone into a talking drum and belt out the occasional verse in Russian. She was born in Moscow, the daughter of musical parents. Her early years were filled with dreams of becoming a composer and a classical pianist. Her musical journey continued when her family migrated to the Bronx in New York when Regina was just nine.

But as she grew older her world expanded beyond Mozart to include the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

Future looking bright for Aussie music   This week the long running organ of musical hype, New Musical Express  named Australian act ‘Tame Impala’ as the recipients of its album of the year for the record ‘Lonerism’. It's the first time an Australian act has been awarded album of the year in the poll's 38 year history. While this is a media outlet famous for its fickle nature, remember ‘The Vines’ anyone?  In July, Elton John popped the champers for his first number one album in the UK in 22 years, courtesy of the remix LP ‘Good Morning’ to ‘The Night’ produced by Sydney duo ‘Pnau’.  A feat that wasn't lost on Elton this month as he invited Pnau's Nick Littlemore and Pete Mayes to join him on stage during his Australian tour. In the past couple of decades there's been a revolution underway in how music is made and distributed.  And it's now entirely affordable for small acts to record their music professionally in a home studio and then to distribute it directly to their fans. My hope is that we'll continue to see an increasing interest and support in Australian music. Not just in the more accessible and fashionable areas of pop, but right across the musical spectrum

.

Billy BraggBilly Bragg  He came to attention as an anti Thatcher, folk punk agitator and then retraced folk music's steps and embraced the poetry and songs of Woody Guthrie. He's touring, talking, singing, mentoring and tweeting during his visit to Australia. One of his latest preoccupations is what will replace the quick agit prop folk song. Is it hip hop or social media and will it make you cry like Levi Stubbs. He sings and talks about Woody, world issues and in the UK. Live performances by Billy in this segment. Cliff Richard - 'We Don't Talk Anymore' 1979 As Britain's answer to Elvis Presley, he dominated the pre Beatles British pop scene in the late '50s and early '60s backed by the Shadows. An accomplished singer with a genuine feel for the music, he was soon steered toward a middle of the road pop direction. His popularity was diminished only slightly by the rise of the Beatles, and remains an institution in Britain, as one of the nation's most popular all round entertainers. See his website
