There is no denying the importance
of Search Engines as they are a boon and a vital resource
to any serious Internet user. It's worth learning a little
about them and become familiar with how to
use them. But what they actually are, or how
they work, may continue to remain a
mystery
However in brief, a 'search engine'
is any software program that searches documents using
specified keywords that you have previously keyed in, and then
returns a list of documents that were found to do with the
subject of interest. ‘Search Engine’ is a general class
of programs, and a term which is used to specifically
describe systems which return billions of queries every day.
The major search engines being used are, Google, Yahoo,
Bing and Askl. and they enable you to search for documents on the
World Wide Web and USENET newsgroups

Search
1) In your internet browser
(the program you are looking at now) bring up a search engine by
typing in the address (URL) at the top, an example being www.google.com (It’s the most
popular 'Search Engine' and the one I use) Note that you can set up
this browser window to bring up (default or home) a search
engine of you choice automatically
2) The 'Search Engine' of your
choice will provide a space prominently displayed, for you to type
in ‘keywords’ for a website you are looking for (keywords are
words are those that describe what you are looking for) Then press
‘Enter’ if you need to (usually it then brings
up your ‘options’ automatically for you)
3) The Search Engine will
then privide you with choice of websites that could
be what you are looking for (The best ones are usually in the
top 5 selections provided)
4) Then ‘click on’ the website
of your choice and it will bring it up for you
5) If this website is not what
you are looking for, just simply ‘Click on’ the ‘Return’ arrow at
the top right hand side of this ‘Browser program’ and it will take
you back to your Search Engine and show you the ‘Options’ as
previously displayed
6) Click onother in
the ‘Option’ as selected, before, in step (4) and try again, and
repeat until you find what you are looking for
7) When you
have found what you want, its then best to ‘Bookmark’ what
youve found to ‘Favorites’ for quick and easy future
access

1) Meta
Tags, insert
'keywords' and 'description' in
your webpage html text under meta tags (keywords and description) as
they are important for search engines. Enter relevant 'keywords' and phrases separated
by commas. Do not duplicate keywords too many times or you may be
penalized by some search engines. The description should be
a very brief one about each page, and may be
displayed in search engine
results
2) Sitemaps are
an
easy way for you to inform search
engines about pages on your site that are available for crawling. In
its simplest form, a sitemap is an XML file that lists URL's for a
site along with additional metadata about each URL, so that search
engines can more intelligently crawl the site.
Web crawlers usually discover pages from links
within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data
to allow crawlers that support sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the
sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated
metadata

URL of your website and their

pages on your website. Once this is
done, they will automatically create an XML

Similar to
already described above, you can also search you own computer for
just about anything that may be there. It gives you options to
view the results and even allows you to make shortcut links to many
places on your computer, like your desktop or any folder. To do this on
Windows 7 you simply click on ‘Start’ in the bottom left
corner, and it will bring up a box saying ‘Search programs and
files’ Just type your keywords there and it will give you many
possibilities listed under ‘Docs’ ‘Pictures’ ‘Music’ and ‘Files’
Just left click to view them, or right click on the results and
it gives you many options. I’ve forgotten how you do this on earlier
Windows versions, but I think it’s similar as
described here
