Jai's Profile

Hello, I'm very pleased indeed to meet
you, and my name is Jai Goulding I was born in 1941 near Tunbridge
Wells in the UK. But was educated and raised in SE London. Im now
70
On leaving school I did a mechanical
engineering apprenticeship for 5 years. When qualified I joined
the Public Service as a draughtsman and after another 5 years
decided that, it was too early to settle down and expected
more from life. Yearning for travel and adventure I decided to
emigrate to Sydney Australia and drive around the
country which took about 5 years, with many
adventures and lived in many places
While travelling, I lived and worked at Mt Isa
Mines in Queensland and saved a lot of money.
Some years later I found myself in Byron Bay,
in NSW which is the most easterly spot in Australia, complete
with lighthouse, and a very popular with surfies. I
moved there with my Sydney girlfriend, who I had met on the
ship on the way back after visiting my family in the UK. I
went to Byron to catch up with a group of my Sydney friends who
were running a health food shop. We worked in the shop
too, and stayed for about 18 months and while there,
I bought some land
Then in '77, I found myself in Canberra.
Although a qualified mechanical engineering tradesman,
I started working as a volunteer with part time
paid roles at 2XX community radio station at the ANU. I
lived there for a year and a half after attending the week
long DTE Festival near Canberra which was the
second one, and held near Bredbo, south of Canberra, which attracted over 15,000 people.
While in Canberra I organised a week long lecture tour of
Canberra for Bill Mollison of Permaculture fame from
Tasmania
After a year or so, I left Canberra
and went to Adelaide in South
Australia via
Tasmania to visit friends who
I had met at the Festival and decided to stay, and I loved
Adelaide meeting my future wife Janet there. I joined
community radio 5UV in Adelaide with some involvement in
student radio and the unemployed. We married in 1979 and
we continued to live in Adelaide. We moved to Strathalbyn
later after finding suitable land and built a low energy mud
brick house.
While living in Strathalbyn, I joined
radio EFM at Victor Harbor and was very
involved there, until I retired after presenting two live music
programmes weekly for 5 years. I withdrew from radio after being involved in all aspects for 30 yrs to
concentrate on my business Fleurcom Janet
and I divorced after 20 years of marriage, we had built a house
and home and raised four
lovely children
I'm now 70 years of age, single, non religious
weigh 80 kgs, height 179cms with hair thinning, and hopefully Im
ageing gracefully, and continue to live near Strathalbyn on the eastern slopes of
the Adelaide Hills. I live and work in my self designed
and built, low energy family home on 5
acres of tree covered land which we propagated and
planted. It is near a charming
township with dozens of heritage buildings
Although I was raised in London, I have lived
in this country now for 40 years, and know it well, and proud
to be an Australian Citizen. I'm easy going,
down to earth, healthy and have a zany sense of
humour. I graduated as a mature age student from Flinders Uni in
'98 after 5 years of study, graduating with a Social
Sciences BA and double major in Sociology and Geography. After
that I spent several years running my own business designing
Internet web sites and other related services, for our business
called Fleurcom. I have
two adult sons Orien and Tully, grandson Konrad who we raised
and son of my deceased stepdaughter Sofie and
eight other grandkids who I don’t see much. I’m an
easy going sort of bloke, honest and sincere and just want to
continue to be creative and useful, enjoy life and meet lots of new
friends and associates. I enjoy eating out and prefer vegetarian food,
don’t smoke, drink or take drugs, legal of otherwise
I travelled a lot when I was younger,
including my drive around Australia in my mini
cooper and also throughout Europe. I really love simplicity,
and am into self sufficiency sustainable
living conservation and
enjoying life. I’m very happy to continue to live and work
in our family home. I’m open minded, understanding, try to
be sympathetic and help and support others.
I was a hippy for
many years and experimented with alternatives and community living,
and although I cut my hair several years ago, I still retain most of
the positive values and try to continue to live, and promote
them. I’m now very inspired and excited, living one day at a
time. I enjoy my involvement with the regenerated Fleurcom business which
is now designed to be non-profit making, and our website, spending my
time in development and maintenance on the Internet and PC,
whilst listening to radio and TV news and music
